2. Why must my application obtain the product UPC systematically through a barcode scanning feature rather than by user input?
The technology behind barcode scanning has reached a point where accuracy is 99.9%. Unfortunately, human transcription of long numeric strings has not improved. While Nutritionix does collect product images from consumer touchpoints, Nutritionix is able to offer unmatched data quality because we do not crowdsource our datapoints, and this applies to our CPG identifiers, too. Requiring a user to scan a product barcode in order to submit a product helps ensure that we are associating the product images with the correct product. Bonus – scanning is also faster for your end-user than manual input.
